There are those who would go ewww!! at using a reusable period pad, but that's when we say, knowledge is power and what you don't know can definitely harm us. Period products waste is not a topic covered in class.
So lets get down to some knowledge about disposable period products. Did you know:
Disposable pads were only invented and made available publicly in the late 1800s and before then everyone used re-usable pads.
Each year in the UK alone, 200,000 tonnes of period waste is produced. That's like over 3 BILLION disposable period products like pads and tampons.
Each girl will use 3 period products a day and for a cycle of 7 days that is 21 pads in a month, 252 pads a year and over 8000 period products over the course of their 35 years of periods. Now think about how many females are in the UK alone. Psst....over 33Million females. Take a minute to do the math here.
Over 80% of those disposable products in the landfills is full of plastic that will take over 500 years to degrade naturally. Sooo, each plastic disposable pad you throw away will last that long in a landfill somewhere.
And before quite recently, most of our landfill waste was shipped overseas to third world countries.
So to sum it all up, even though the world is over millions of years old, in less than 150 years we humans have managed to deface our world with this much waste in this short a time.
